I fulfilled a longtime bucket list dream by taking a transatlantic cruise – sailing across the ocean, visiting multiple countries, and experiencing the magic of life at sea for days on end. It was everything I hoped for….. and more!

Fun Academy

One of the unexpected highlights of my transatlantic cruise on Carnival Legend was the Fun Academy-a series of onboard classes designed to keep the mind engaged while at sea.

From cooking to photography to a discussion on “HamRadios: the Original Social Media”, there was always something to spark curiosity.

The Azores: Ponta Delgada

Our stop in Ponta Delgada, in the Azores, was nothing short of magical. This lush, volcanic island welcomed us with stunning coastal views, vibrant green landscapes, and cobbled streets full of charm.  The mix of old world architecture and natural beauty gave the city a peaceful, storybook feel. Walking along the harbor, enjoying the gardens and exploring the shops was an unforgettable experience.

One of the highlights was visiting the unique Arruda Pineapple Plantation– yes, pineapples in the Azores! Grown in greenhouses instead of tropical fields, these tiny pineapples pack a punch of sweetness and have such an interesting cultivation process.

It was a quick but fascinating stop, and we even got to taste fresh pineapple liqueur (highly recommend grabbing a bottle to take home!) It’s a perfect little detour whether you are staying on the island or just in port for the day on a cruise.

Sete Cidades

Afterward, we drove out to the iconic Sete Cidades, where the Blue and Green Lakes took our breath away. The contrast between the two lakes—one a deep blue, the other a vibrant green—is even more magical in person. Surrounded by lush volcanic craters and rolling hills, it was one of those pinch-me moments that reminded me why I love exploring the world. Be sure to stop at the Vista do Rei viewpoint for the best panoramic shot, and try to go early in the day before the clouds roll in. This spot is a dream for photographers—bring your wide-angle lens!

Strait of Gibraltar

After our day in the Azores, we boarded the ship again to continue our journey to Spain by traveling through the Strait of Gibraltar. There’s something surreal about gliding through the Strait of Gibraltar at 1 am., wrapped in darkness and silence except for the soft sound of the ship’s wake and quiet conversation of those of us who came out on deck for this experience. Standing on deck, we watched the distant lights of Spain on one side and the brighter lights of Morocco on the other – two continents, a narrow ribbon of water, and us right in the middle. It felt like crossing a threshold, like stepping between worlds. For a moment, history and geography pressed, a reminder of all who have passed this same way for centuries.

Alicante

During our next cruise stop in Alicante, we started the day with a walking tour through the city—such a great way to get a feel for the local vibe. The streets were full of charm, with colorful buildings, palm-lined boulevards, and little cafés tucked into every corner. After exploring the city, we took a drive up into the mountains to visit the village of Guadalest—and wow, what a hidden gem! Perched high above the valley with sweeping views, this tiny village felt like stepping back in time. We wandered through narrow stone streets, visited the old castle ruins, and soaked in the scenery. Our port day in Alicante was the perfect mix of coastal city charm and mountain village magic – all in one unforgettable day.

Another visit through history and the centuries: Alhambra in Granada, Spain. Steeped in centuries of history, this breathtaking fortress and palace complex is a masterpiece of Moorish architecture. Intricate carvings, serene courtyards, and flowing fountains tell stories of rich cultural heritages and the blending of Islamic and Spanish influences. Walking through its halls felt like stepping back in time, and it left a deep impression within me.

Transatlantic Cruise Travel Pro Tip:
When planning your transatlantic cruise, consider whether you prefer having all your sea days at the start or at the end of the journey. Some itineraries begin with a long stretch of sea days, offering a relaxing way to ease into the trip, while others end with the ocean crossing after visiting multiple ports. Think about your travel style – do you want to unwind right away, or would you rather explore first and then relax on the way home?
